Aye, but if you look at the number of WUs out, it only says 34. It's actually been saying 10,000 for a whiles. Either there's not really 10,000 WUs or something is stuck. I think it's the former actually.

Krys, you are strangely quiet. Did you have another emergency departure?

This is one of the last of the current batch of work units still out there See Here
It is still out there because it has a major problem.
The first volunteer had it running for over 171 hours before aborting the WU.
I aborted the same WU last night as it had reached over 36 Hours (still using CPU) and only showed just between 52% and 53%, which it had shown for many, many hours without moving.

Seems to be in an endless loop.

Got caught in an event horizon. ;)

When will there be a new batch of work?

Hi Krys

Are you having troubles with the server today? The website has been up and down in part or full throughout the day and looks like the work server has been down for a whiles today.

Everything except for the work server seems to be working at the moment... still can't get a server status.

Thanks Yavanius! Thus, I will have to learn how it can be done. Nevertheless, I have never seen anyone buying or selling science posters on conferences.

Any chance for a screensaver? I realize at the moment, you are doing mostly simulations so you can't present a real sky-map such as with Einstein, but is there a way to show a simulation of the objects and roughly what is being analyzed (like a heads-up display)?

Thanks for this question! We are currently presenting the work on the international conference where it gets a wide interest. After the return I will put the poster and some interesting graphics on the page.

The previous work was done for a small subgroup of objects and that's why it took less time. Currently, we aim at simulating the whole population. It will not be possible without the large numerical power we have thanks to the participants of U@H project. Nevertheless, as several different models have to be checked, it still needs a lot of time to calculate. We will provide you with all the partial results as only we obtain them.

So, I am curious. Can you not piggy-back on the data other projects are gathering, such as Einstein?

The thing is you have to someone there to explain (in general, we don't want eyes to glaze over!) what the poster is about, the project, and briefly about BOINC.

Actually, once they get BOINC, all they have to remember is 'Universe' and they can find the project on the list.

Just remember the original SETI@home was all about the screensaver. Most people had little clue what it was all doing, but it sure looked cool. ;)

Hi,

I haven't been getting any new work for several hours.
Server says it has 33,000 to send (though task specific says 23,000 unsent !) but they aren't being sent to me.

Think we need some more kicking action please !

Thanks.

I'm getting that too since yesterday. Although BOINCstats knocked out all my projects when I globally added a new project and after that I couldn't get any new Universe tasks when I reattached.. Maybe it's just timing...

Ah well, I got to my goal anyways. I can wait. :)

Usually I do restarts when needed manually, I prefer to do it under control.
Currently was different situation as I had to travel rapidly and don't have time to prepare systems.

I was thinking along the lines of what SETI@home does every Tuesday... You don't have that much info (yet), but just a thought. :)

Thanks for this suggestion! Unfortunately, it is not feasible. Two most important reasons are following: 1) poster is the property of the University and we are not allowed to sell it in any form, and 2) I doubt that someone will be willing to buy a poster presenting work of someone other.

Nevertheless, we are continuously looking for additional fund for the project, thus such ideas are very helpful!

The bookstore sells University themed merchandise. ;) I realize though that's somewhat different than a third party selling it. However, perhaps it might be possible to have a company sell it officially on behalf of the University? Otherwise the only other way would be faculty or students authorized to sell it at conventions which is feasible for Europe, but probably not for North America.

Does the bookstore have an online presence where it sells stuff? Then it would be possible to have a poster present at a convention (perhaps some available for astrophysics/physics professors with official institute id) and then have them visit the bookstore.

Alternatively, with the University's blessing, set up an online shop. I'd suggest something like Cafe Press, but I don't you could get the poster in the offerings. SETI@home use to have a shop, although I'm not sure if it's still active.

Cheers,

Yavanius

We made a poster to present the results of Universe@home project on the international conference.

You should have these printed out and give small ones out at the space and sci-fi conventions. Then charge a modest fee for large posters and use the profits for the project. :)

Yes, I had to restart project and MySQL server.

Okay, wasn't sure if you were back and maybe the University had to flip the servers for work or something. Maybe a reboot every couple weeks scheduled if you need to periodically restart? That way those that go through withdrawals even though there's 30 other projects to participate in can plan. ;)

I don't have any 32bit Linux machine at the moment.

I will try to do it on virtualbox but can't tell you when at the moment as I have some other more important tasks on my list...

My other notebook is 32 bit and has a shot hard drive so I'm running Lubuntu off a flash drive at the moment.

Hi Kryzstof,

Welcome back!

I was doing it more for the populace as it's not well-known unless you are on the BOINC mailing list or a tester.

I'm hoping personally that in the future BOINC can provide a central hub of resources for project admins both in administration and coordination/sharing of resources...

BOINC transitioning to a Community Based Governance...

David Anderson wrote:

BOINC's funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation has ended, at least for the time being.
This funding supported me, Rom Walton, and Charlie Fenton.
We're now working on other things, although we'll stay involved in BOINC at some level.

The BOINC project will continue, and will be run according to a community-based model rather than centrally.
In essence, the people who contribute to BOINC now make the decisions about it.

This model is summarized here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/ProjectGovernance
and described in detail here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1C6pU5RqidYBxk9oyAevm1yH1tn4Hw27oM8YpvsnR-gg

There will probably be little visible change.
The BOINC software will continue to work.
The translation system, Alpha testing project, BOINC web site, message boards, and email lists will continue to operate.
However, any new development and major bug fixes to BOINC will need to be done by volunteer programmers.
I'm confident that the BOINC community will meet the challenge.

I welcome your feedback.
Please post it to boinc_admin@googlegroups.com, a new email list for discussions about the BOINC project as a whole.

FYI, Universe@home appears to gone down sometime after 4am PDT (1200 UTC) and before 5am (0100) and just came back right before 8:54am (1654).

Was getting SQL errors on the website in the news section, but looks like that was just the server getting back up to speed as it cleared out.

Not quite Apples to Apples. The windows client is a 32 bit while Linux is 64 bit. While I don't know performance increases in GENERAL (not just here), I think comparing a Win64 to a Lx64 would be a better comparison.

On that topic, if you have the time when you return, krzyszp, would you make a 32 bit Linux client please? Thanks in advance. :)

I'm curious why you only have a 64 bit Linux client?

Also, you should have some kind of check for Lx 32/64 bit, and have a msg issued the 32 bit isn't supported.
