My 3900X with Ubuntu 19.04 currently needs just a bit more than an hour per WU.

That seems fast compared to my various Ryzens. Are you running on all cores?
Or else, I need a 3900x.

And this is not uncommon at universities. They are probably not back from semester break.
This upcoming week may show signs of life.

Actually I was asking why you cared that the tasks were temporarily out.

That is a strange way to ask.

Don't panic, there'll be more work shortly. Why do you need it available 100% of the time?

You seem to feel that you are telling me something. Go ahead and take the day off.
Happy New Year!

This is all very interesting, but there is no work. We won't have anything to export.

The UK (where I live) is leaving the EU. Yet I assume I'll continue to have to put up with this nonsense, aswell as that cookie consent rubbish on every single webpage I go to. Even Canadians and Americans (who are most definitely not in the EU) are affected by that. What gave the EU the right to screw up the whole world? The Americans ought to sue them!

Be my guest (I am in the U.S.). But even if they did not ask our consent, they would then have to ask if we are living in the EU. So it is one checkbox or another anyway. I can live with it, if that is as far as it goes. It might get worse.

69) Message boards : Science : Huge Black Hole 'That Shouldn't Exist in Our Galaxy' Discovered by Scientists (Message 3879)
Posted 28 Nov 2019 by Jim1348
Post:
A large black hole that "should not exist" in the Milky Way has been discovered. The black hole, named LB-1, was detected after researchers found a star with an orbit that could only be explained if it had a "dark companion." This companion, they found, was a black hole with a mass 70 times that of the sun—far bigger than current models of stellar evolution allow for.

.............................
David Reitze, the director of the gravitational wave detector LIGO, who was not involved in the study, commented on the findings. "This discovery forces us to re-examine our models of how stellar-mass black holes form," he said in a statement. "This remarkable result, along with the LIGO-Virgo detections of binary black hole collisions during the past four years, really points towards a renaissance in our understanding of black hole astrophysics."

This was cited over at Einstein. It looks like it might be of interest here.

The spiraling dance of a pair of colliding black holes should last for billions of years. Yet we’ve caught about 10 black hole collisions since 2016 — far more than we would expect. Some process must be at work to accelerate the collision process, to make black holes come together more quickly than anticipated.

In previous versions, they had the problem of stuck work units that ran indefinitely; search for "long runners".
I haven't seen it for a long time though. Chances are, it just got stuck on you system. Try a reboot.

After all the whining about credits, I thought I should look at mine on BOINCstats, which I very seldom do. I see that they are over twice as high as on any other project.

I think the credits here should be cut in half. It will drive people to the other projects, where they can get what they deserve.

I don't think I have ever seen that, so it is probably something unusual. I would detach from the project, and then reattach. That will recreate some possibly corrupted files.

In going, can I just make the point that a completed WU advances the science of the project by precisely the same amount whether it be crunched by a competitive cruncher, by a Gridcoin cruncher or by a dyed-in-the-wool astrophysicist who crunches nothing else.

In staying, I can point out that the number of crunchers has increased from 1848 to 1871 in the last day. Maybe the ones leaving are making room for the ones who want to do it.

I really don't like to be a person, who make "inflation" on BOINC projects...

I like that attitude myself. It gives me more confidence in the science too, which is why I am here.

Post:
Almost a quarter of the universe stands literally in the shadows. According to cosmologists’ theories, 25.8% of it is made up of dark matter, whose presence is signaled essentially only by its gravitational pull. What this substance consists of remains a mystery. Hermann Nicolai, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in Potsdam, and his colleague Krzysztof Meissner from the University of Warsaw have now proposed a new candidate - a superheavy gravitino.

Interesting stuff from the University of Warsaw. I wonder if this implies anything special about black holes?

If this figure were bogus and in fact there actually aren't many BHSpin to send it would explain things.
A small bunch get added - a few systems request jobs and get them all - the rest of the system see there are no jobs.

If your machine is getting work at all, then you will get it about every other request, keeping your machine busy. And there are many people who are not getting work at all.

And the two groups are interchangeable, one week to another. So I don't know of anything that explains that.

which was odd, as it had had at most 1 job before the reset. So where did 18 lost ones come from?

I saw that too once. It loses them just so it can find them.
