1) Message boards : Number crunching : Downloading tasks not working? (Message 5928)

Nope.
I'd hit Retry pending transfers & see if that helps, if not, reboot the computer.

Thanks for the feedback.

I've been clicking the "Retry" function multiple times, and nothing happens and the task download does not start.

Rebooting the host didn't help and hitting "Retry" a few more times did not work after the reboot.

So, I've (sadly) "Aborted" the tasks (as tasks from other projects are downloading fine) and at least they will now go back into the "Available" stream, so someone else might have better luck.

Tim

Hi

I have 123 tasks allocated to one of my hosts, but they are not downloading to this host...and I see this in the Transfers tab (of BM):

Download: pending (project backoff: xx:xx.xx)
Download: retry in xx.xx.xx (project backoff:....)

It's been like this since 27th October... !

Anyone else having issues getting tasks?

Tim

With all the global firepower out there I'm shocked there isn't more projects out there to slice the pie further. Either the world has run out scientific endeavors or the importance of what we do is overstated.

There are many "problems" associated with running BOINC projects...

One needs a suitably good "project" for people to support, with clear aims and goals
One needs plenty of actual "real world tasks", in order to satisfy the demand for tasks.
One needs plenty of "bandwidth" to be able to feed that demand for tasks
One needs reliable and capacious hardware platforms on which to run the project
One needs money for admin/support staff to run the server and keep tasks flowing
One needs patience to deal with short term problems (as every project will face at some point)
(I could go on, but you get the point...)

Ticking all of these boxes (and more perhaps) is something that not every project can do...and therein lies the problem - running a BOINC project with limited appeal, off low-end hardware and with little support just doesn't work...and there are a few projects that are like this even now.

Hi

I am sure that for just a small-ish outlay, you could have separate dedicated servers for the website and message board and then another one or two for upload/downloads as well as for the validator(s). I am sure there are those within the BOINC community who can help with setting ths up.

(The SETI@home project did exactly this and it worked well most days...and that is/was a much bigger project with far more active users and bandwidth).

Tim

As with most projects the problem is money, I don't know if they have a donate here link but it might help

Hi Mikey

Indeed...but server hardware is cheap these days, and quality servers can also be donated from users who have upgraded.

Having a donation link SHOULD be seriously considered by the admins here, as long as it is correctly documented as to who has donated and what the money has been used for. Maybe have one donation "option" for "hardware upgrades" and another for "admin/staff costs" etc.

Either way, given how popular this project is, it is about time they stop relying on ONE server to do everything, as this is where most of the bottle neck is...and it can be made so much better without a lot of cost.

The problem is now in very large number of concurrent HTTP connections.
Our server handles about 300 simultaneous connections and it is maximum what it can do.

Setting more makes server very unstable (in terms of deamons, not machine or operating system) and cause more problems then it solve.

Most (if not all) BOINC documented method of increasing server performance I have already implemented, but we are limited by network and what system can handle.

Hi all

Anyone else having issues with this project?

I've got completed tasks to upload and I've run out of new tasks and yet I get this:

19/03/2020 13:42:36 | Universe@Home | Requesting new tasks for CPU
19/03/2020 13:42:59 | Universe@Home | Scheduler request failed: Couldn't connect to server
19/03/2020 13:43:02 | | Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
19/03/2020 13:43:03 | | Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

The Server Status says that:

Download server universeathome.pl Running
Upload server universeathome.pl Running
Scheduler debian1 Running
feeder debian1 Running
transitioner debian1 Running

and

Tasks ready to send 114238
Tasks in progress 468223
Workunits waiting for validation 13
Workunits waiting for assimilation 0
Workunits waiting for file deletion 4
Tasks waiting for file deletion 218
Transitioner backlog (hours) 0.00

So, where's the "blockage" - I have no issues with my internet connection, plus I can access my account here (else I can't write this message).

There's an issue somewhere...but where?

Hi both

Same problem here...cannot upload and therefore no more downloads.

I've PM'd the admin and hopefully they already know about the problem.

Just a shame it has happened when the Formula BOINC Sprint is happening...maybe this "event" is in sympathy with the huge storm in/around Japan, affecting the Formula One race qualification this morning ;-)

10) Message boards : Number crunching : Immediate "Computation errors" on downloaded tasks (Message 2470)

So, I've found some error messages:

Outcome Computation error
Client state Compute error
Exit status -185 (0xffffffffffffff47) ERR_RESULT_START

and stderr report says:

<core_client_version>7.8.2</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
couldn't start app: CreateProcess() failed - (unknown error)
</message>
]]>

Anyone have any clue what these mean?
