Haven't had my coffee yet either. Fed myself, now to fix breakfast for the critters. I did see a big slug of credit for the project yesterday. More than usual. A benefit of the extra crunchers the Formula BOINC contest brought in this weekend. But now having difficulty uploading this morning. A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Still hanging around. I took a break yesterday and turned most of the hosts off to help in the California power FlexAlert. The A/C just wasn't able to keep up with heat load anyway with it being 112° outside. Never could get to my 78° F. thermostat setpoint, so by turning off all but the daily driver with no BOINC running allowed the house to finally cool down. Spent most of the day on the phone with my solar inverter manufacturer Level 2 support still trying to diagnose the issue why the replacement inverter still isn't producing any monitoring of the solar generation. If the inverter is actually working at all came into question. Turns out the refurbed unit they sent me as an RMA replacement is likely defective. I get to tear it apart next week and replace the display/compute module if they send out the replacement part on schedule. A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

The A/C just wasn't able to keep up with heat load anyway with it being 112° outside.43°c is pretty much the limit for residential aircons. From that point on they just can't get rid of enough heat to compress the gas back to a liquid (many say up to 46°c, but their output often starts dropping off once the outdoor temp hits 40°c. Over 46°c they will shut down to avoid damaging themselves). Setting up a water supply to some nozzles that produce very fine mist & putting them on the external unit air inlet will allow the unit to operate normally up to around 50°c or so. In places where the temperature is often over 40°c some people are going to the effort of making it automated- temperature over 40°c & aircon compressor is running, mister turns on. Temperature drops below 38°c or aircon is shut down, mister turns off. Grant Darwin NT |

Thanks for the idea. If I were to use a fine mister spray, the water consumption shouldn't be too bad I would think. But I have had to cut back on my watering schedule this year since we have been in Stage 2 restriction the whole year. Just watering just enough for plants and trees to not actually die. But all the green stuff is really sad being mostly brown-yellow-green. Last month's bill was an eye opener at $350 since I went well past the alloted 15,000 gallons and was into Tier 3 payment schedule penalty. A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

Thanks for the idea. If I were to use a fine mister spray, the water consumption shouldn't be too bad I would think.Extremely low. Even with dozens of heads arranged around the inlet of the outdoor unit aimed inwards, the water usage per hour is bugger all. It's about (relatively) very high pressure/very low flow rate. The finer the mist, the greater the amount of heat removed per litre of water used (the more surface area of the water that is in contact with the air for a given volume of water, the greater the cooling effect for a given volume of water). Watering a garden or lawn you want a (relatively) high flow rate with large water droplets- if there is misting the pressure is too high for that sprinkler head & that mist just goes to waste- it evaporates long before it will reach the ground. For this application you want as much of the water to evaporate as possible, so the finer the mist, the better. If you get water running down the condenser and out of the bottom of the unit, the mist isn't fine enough or there is just more than is needed. Many years ago, the place i was working at had a high-capacity ducted system that was basically running at it's absolute limit. During the week it was started up around 06:45am, no problems. But on the weekend trying to start it at 8:30am, not a chance. The compressor would start up, and 30 seconds later shut down. 5 minutes later, compressor started up, 30 seconds later shut down. The ambient temperature was just too high, and so the pressure in the system was too high and so it would shut down to avoid damage. The usual routine was to start it up, and then hose it down for about 5min. That got rid of enough heat for the pressure to drop down into a reasonable range after the initial start-up surge. Of course if the power went out at all during the day, you'd have to hose it down again when the power came back on in order for it to be able to run again. For about 9 months of the year, that compressor pretty much ran on a 100% duty cycle. Like i said, the poor thing was running at it's absolute limit. Grant Darwin NT |

That's the situation I have to deal with here with my BOINC heat load. The A/C has to run 24/7 non-stop and never cycles off for the most part or not until 5-7AM when the outside temps reach their lowest at just before sunrise. I've had a A/C failure every year like clockwork every August for the past 5 years. I've escaped that failure so far this year, crossing fingers. Normally just either pits the condensor relay contacts until they don't close properly or goes open circuit or just opens up the wire leading to the condensor off the relay. Sounds like I better get down to the hardware store and purchase a fine mister solution before the summer stock items are removed. A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |
