Currently we have nearly 600'000 WU's in progress and you finish 300'000 WU's daily!

I never seem these numbers on our project :)

Very big THANK YOU for your support for our project :)

BTW, our server is not killed by this quantity of tasks mainly because of switching to SSD's.
I can't believe there are still projects (like Milkyway) still struggling with hard disks. Hard disks are from the 20th century. Mechanical storage ROTFPMSL!

Are you notice, that ROTFPMSL disks works on the server since 2015 24/7? :)
I believe there is still no SSD's on the market which will last for that long with same quantity of data written... At least in 2015 was not for our budget...

Backblaze annual failure analysis
HDDs Versus SSDs, A First Look
Look at the Average Failure Rate Tables . . . . . Rather eye-opening
Caveat is that the SSD drives have not been in use as long at the HDD's

Yes, most of the electricity used for PCs is waste heat so anyone with electric heat might well put some PCs in the lower floor and let the heat rise to fill their home.

Most of my winter heat comes from my PCs running. I don't use old hardware but the furnace does not turn on until low 20sF
I don't need any heating. 9 CPUs and 5 GPUs is enough.

Yep I do the same thing. Used to keep 4 micro PCs under my desk during the winter. A little counter productive in the summer, unfortunately. :)
Yip, I have been known to have air conditioning and Boinc running at once. I have to do something about this electricity bill.

Yes they have a shorter life, but they're 50x faster, and you know precisely when they'll wear out. Mine say % life remaining.

HDDs break without warning. SSDs tell you precisely when they will wear out. And even when they do, they just start shrinking.

You really believe in what it saying? :)

Every server admin know, that first error on SSD is usually also the last one.
HDD's even with broken places on surface still allow you to recover most data. Our server is a proof of this...

Works for me. Yeah there are a few times when it just dies, but disks do the same.

Every server admin know, that first error on SSD is usually also the last one.
I have one with 15 errors, it says 40% life left, it works perfectly.

Anyway you bought some SSDs so you must like them :-)

They seem to be working very well for you.

At a huge expense. And when you have RAID you don't need to recover any data.

My server-1 still works with IDE drive in raid1 with bad sectors (sometimes many), there is no data loss even when one of them becomes invisible. However, it is necessary to intervene regularly to replace the permanently lost disks. can be Linux handles this better than Windung.

I ran a Windows server at my work with RAID. If a disk failed I just slid it out and put another in. It rebuilt itself in 2 hours while 1000 people were using it.

Hi, Krzysztof (sorry for the cross-post),

Congratulations on all the work you've been doing!

I have several Ubuntu VMs, which have been successfully processing Universe (approx 23M cobblestones) for a while. I put them onto other work for a while to up the score of some of my other projects. But now, when I switch back, I can't pick up any Universe work units, even though there are >3M available.

My original config was Ubuntu 21.xx with BOINC 7.16.x, and that ran fine for many months. That machine now doesn't pick up your work units.

As a test, I have built a new machine on Ubuntu 22.04 with BOINC 7.18.1 (the version in the repository) and, though it picks up other projects, it also tells me that there are 0 Universe work units available.

Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Nick

See the threads over on the Number Crunching board. It is due to the high demand from the BOINC Pentathlon.
