~/.BOINC/stderrgui.txt
It seems I misread what log file was meant, have you tried what happens if you make the file read-only? also there may be the possibility to redirect from the file to /dev/null, so that the file itself is a filesystem link

Yes, exactly, it's a non-standard approach to error message handling for an app run from the command line, but of course that is not how boinc is intended to be run. There are in fact several similar files in ~/.BOINC, but it looks like only stderrgui.txt is a problem. So I've followed your suggestion (thank you) and linked it to /dev/null (ln -s /dev/null stderrgui.txt), and after a few hours of running all seems OK (I'm paying particular attention to the size of the virtual disk). I'll report back if it explodes in my face again.

I have the byobu flavour of tmux running on an antique laptop that runs Linux without a gui, but I think linking stderrgui.txt to /dev/null is a much neater solution for a Windows PC (assuming it continues to work). It's nice being able to simply close windows to reduce workspace clutter.

I've found that einstein@home is about 4.5 times faster on ubuntu than win10. (That's for a gpu task, I'm not sure if they have cpu only tasks)

people don't usually report this kind of speed difference between Windows/Linux on Einstein. some of the fastest systems on the project still run Windows. That just wouldnt be the case if Linux was more than 4x faster.

What GPU do you have and which GPU tasks/application were you running? very slow processing time like this usually means something is overcommited, either CPU or GPU memory.

You are likely correct, I'll run some more experiments. It would be nice if the websites held on to the run time of results a little longer but I understand it isn't a great use of storage.

Ok so I've run Einstein tasks again on ubuntu and win 10 on the same PC and I'm guessing that I must have overcommitted the cpu in the previous experiment (not leaving a core free for the gpu) because this time I got the following for Einstein:
Ubuntu run time 2500-3200 sec, cpu time 375 sec. Win 10 run time 2260-2500 sec, cpu time 1050 sec. So higher cpu time on windows but shorter run time. ubuntu host win host.

(Yes I know this is the universe message board but want to correct my mistake)

Hi,
Is it possible to manage
Hyper-V virtual machine with Ubuntu 20.04, via BoincTasks on local network?
I try to do it, but it doesn't work for me.

I put the password in gui_rpc_auth.cfg
I entered the IP in remote_hosts.cfg
I restarted everything
With the command hostname -I I specified the Ubuntu IP that I created.
I turned off my windows firewall
I even went so far as to create a network bridge.
Overall, I tried different settings.

I am asking for some suggestions, is it possible?

Never tried a VM. But do run BT on Ubuntu20 through WINE.
Why can't you just run BT natively in Windows?
You can also ask for support at the BT forums from Fred.

There is also a new Javascript version of BT to try out if interested.

Are you including the port of the VM when listing in BT?
