There are reports that people are not able to create accounts to crunch.

Not true.

As I posted above in post 3925 you can create accounts and crunch, there have been 50+ accounts today (from https://universeathome.pl/universe/show_user.php?userid=202608 onwards) and some of those accounts have credit now. More were created yesterday, and the day before...

Thank you for the new user fix.

I'm not aware the admin has put a new user fix in.
In the thread Gary linked to it was reported that everything was working the same day the thread was started.

It was working then, it is working now, no fix needed !

Found the tickbox to enable the consent, thanks to a fellow Dutchman. Enabled it yesterday evening. However nothing happened. Restarted the PC, Boincmanager. Still no results.

I don't know why they told you to log out and reboot your computer, you didn't need to do that.

"Still no results" - I assume you mean you are not getting stats at BOINCstats appearing ?
Your results are being exported, see here at Free-dc: https://stats.free-dc.org/user/uni/10785

I guess Willy at BOINCstats still hasn't enabled stats to be imported yet...

You need to post there.

I told maybe he need to reboot his computer.
After I gave consent there was for a while nothing happening. So I logged out of my universe account en reboot the computer. Then I saw my stats. I wasn't sure the reboot was the reason I saw my stats,or just the elapsed time.
So I wrote maybe.

Found the consent thing, we should have been informed. Most people won't know about it, so like happened with Einstein, our stats are now meaningless. With Einstein, I jumped from 11000th place to 1000th place, because Boincstats only counts those who consent. Looks like 90% of people didn't know about it.

The UK (where I live) is leaving the EU. Yet I assume I'll continue to have to put up with this nonsense, aswell as that cookie consent rubbish on every single webpage I go to. Even Canadians and Americans (who are most definitely not in the EU) are affected by that. What gave the EU the right to screw up the whole world? The Americans ought to sue them!

Be my guest (I am in the U.S.). But even if they did not ask our consent, they would then have to ask if we are living in the EU. So it is one checkbox or another anyway. I can live with it, if that is as far as it goes. It might get worse.

By "be my guest", I assume you mean I should sue the EU? I think that would have to be the US government or a big company or other entity doing that, not a private individual who would get nowhere.

Why would they have to ask where you live? It's very easy for a server to see what your IP address is, therefore know what country you're in (if you use a proxy, then so what, that was you faking your IP and not their responsibility). Some webpages do actually only serve the cookie notice to EU countries.

It's not ok to live with (in the UK anyway), I'm bombarded with about 10 of those banners for cookies every single day, getting in the way of me viewing websites. They're worse than banner ads. At least I can block those.

And in the case of BOINC, it's destroyed the stats completely. Either you don't notice the checkbox has appeared for a particular project (Universe never informed me), or you do tick it and now only get compared with the other people who have ticked. I have no idea how I compare with the other 90% of the population who never ticked it. (It is about 90% who don't tick in Einstein for example).[/quote]

I wonder if boinc sites could not anonymize the stats of people who do not want to give their consent. The pseudonym of the volunteer would be replaced in the export by an anonymous identifier created randomly at the first export of results. This would be a solution to avoid that boincstats, for example, provides global results that are sometimes inconsistent, so that all the activity of the boinc site would be resumed while preserving the will of those who do not want to expose themselves. It would even be possible for sites with statistics such as boincstats to make an additional statistic on the proportion of people who want to stay anonymous in relation to the total number of volunteers. This way everyone would be satisfied: stats sites, and the volunteers, whether or not they consent to the export of their personal data.
This already exists, when you want to make open data for the general public (medical or administrative data used by statisticians). It should not be too difficult to set up. It's just a question of will. All boinc projects would gain in readability and transparency.

The rgpd is not necessarily bad, it's just its sudden implementation that creates bad consequences not imagined at the beginning.

It is necessary to leave time to time.

I agree with your post in its entirety. I have said a similar thing in the Boincstats forum. Please go and post there aswell. If enough people suggest it they might do it.

There's no reason to mess up the stats because of some people wishing to be anonymous (or more likely just don't know about the tickbox, which you won't unless you use boincstats and wonder why you're not there anymore, because for some reason no project bothered to email us about this very important change!)

@Tony44b

I suspect BOINCstat is waiting a little while for a fair Universe users to click the box. Once they accept the Stat's download the users who have not clicked the box will be blanked out. So I think that he is delaying to be nice to the large group to give them a chance.

Isn't that kinda cheating? I don't agree with this GDPR nonsense in any way whatsoever, but by not blanking them yet, they're showing stats of people who have not consented.

Also, most people (including myself) won't know about the tickbox until they spot they've vanished from the list.

You have good points but displaying old Stat's is not a violation... Exporting stat's without consent is.
