Message 3713 - Posted: 22 Aug 2019, 20:17:58 UTC

Hello,

I noticed that some of my tasks run for nearly 3 hours compared to the usual 1h 15m, approximately. This is happening on the same Linux host with i3-2100 CPU.
Any particular reason why?

Probably you got new work units (batch _283_) which work on new computation data set.

Thanks, Krzysztof.

Is this one from a new batch?

No, this is "old" one...

New ones have "_283_" instead of "_263_" in name.

Also, soon the number will increase as this is batch number ascending on every task generation.

You are true i noticed the same with Windows 10
but i tell me one question
I compute the whole day with 44 processors and i have 529 tasks solved in one day
So i came to 44 tasks solved every 2 hours
The server say that 100 tasks are solved in 2 hours and 6 minutes and there are 2200 user connected at the project
So i tell me truly one question: Is the server saying true or the other make only a few work for universe@home
I am in a trouble!

Best Regards

You have to remember that for most users this project isn't only one on their machines :)

Also, I can use more then 140 threads but usually only one of my host compute WU's all day :)

Also, on my ARM machine 1 new WU needs about 12 hours to finish.

Edit:
In last 24 hours was finished 116'000 work units.

It is a clear difference here on an i7-8700 (Ubuntu 18.04).
The "263" take 36 minutes.
The "283" take 2 hours.

I am glad for the longer ones actually.

116000/24=4833 tasks solved in one hour
one tasks solved every 1,38second
100 tasks solved every 134.25second
100 tasks solved every 0.0034 hours
There is truly a problem with the server

other way to look the problem:
The server receive every 24 hours 116000 tasks
i compute every day 529 tasks
the server says 100 tasks computed every 2.09 hours
so the true value of my percentage is: (529/116000)*100=0.4560%
If i look the server i do:
44 tasks every 2 hours so the percentage is a litle higher as 44%

My Odroid-N2 (ARM64 with Ubuntu 18.04):
The "263" take 2 hours.
The "283" take 6 hours.

Credit is going to plummet since they both receive the same 666.67 credit. Gridcoin might go elsewhere.

I have a small pile of android devices that have been happily crunching universe for years. One of the faster ones(for android) used to average a WU in about 6 - 8 hours, it now averages 24hrs +.

And as for the slowest android devices I run here? err If one of the new WU ever finishes i'll let you know. So far after 35 hrs it's 74% complete..

Oh well I guess that's one way to reduce load on the servers :(

Triple the work is the same as reducing the compensation 66% for the same work....

Getting $150.00 an hour going down to $50.00 per hour?

I'll be finding myself a new job......

Is a credit increase planned? Proportionally, a WU would be worth just shy of 2000 right now...

Of course, this is based on compute time not number of operations. Perhaps the workload isn't optimized and is leaving some parts of the silicon idle during some cycles depending on architecture. Did anyone notice any difference in number of gigaflops reported in the properties section of the WUs?

For now I will switch work to another project until this gets settled I guess...

I never looks at credits and have no idea what they are. But I just added another machine anyway.

I run 3 x Threadrippers, 2 x 8700K and 17 x ARM machines at Universe right now (188 threads). I do not mind if the wu's are larger and take longer to run but you need to immediately adjust credits proportionally. Otherwise participation will plummet. Of course if that is acceptable to you, then so be it.
Cheers

I think, we give too much credits recently. Seriously, at the time when I set credit it takes 6 hours to finish on single core on i7 CPU.
Recently, some tasks finish in 18 minutes on same machine.

I really don't like to be a person, who make "inflation" on BOINC projects...

OK, it is your project but my machines. I have moved them to Einstein. Good luck!

I like that attitude myself. It gives me more confidence in the science too, which is why I am here.
Keep up the work, and I will do it.
