As you know, I'm working on Universe@Home for some years now. I was also one of creators and admins of Radioactive@Home project and few another BOINC projects.
Unfortunately, for long time I'm working on this project voluntarily as is no funds on it to my role.
Because of this, I will ask you for support on my Patreon profile.

I will not be providing funds for two reasons:

Reason 1: you did not specify exactly what the funds will be used for in your post as well as on Patreon.

Reason 2: I commit a lot of CPU time to Universe@home. If I were to calculate the funds for power + hardware usage, perhaps you should be paying me to continue to support the project? To date, I have received no funds to my role.

In summary, please don't ask for personal money when so many volunteer their time, hardware and more to the project.

I agree with the other post. What will the funds go towards? New server hardware? Procuring more data? Advancing the software apps? Hosting fees? I like to help out when I can, but to make a broad request from users contributing electricity costs and hardware resources without knowing where the funds go makes me less likely to do so.

I think the goals on Patreon site shows clearly where founds will go...

I just need to manage where I have to put my time. The project don't get any funds from long time (only space in server room and it's electricity).
I'm not an CAMK employee (never bin)...
Currently I just have choice - continue managing the project or spend my spare time on other work.

Hi Paul,

I don't get paid either and thousands other volunteers, too. And what I get in return? Some bages, certificates, and satisfaction in participating in project that appeals to me as interesting and useful. Does it cost me? Sure it does. But I am not trying to race with anyone, I don't own super beefed up rig and I run this and few other projects on rather dated equipment.

I guess nobody asks anyone to run they computers or servers 24h/365 days. It's completely voluntarily.

Hi Krzysztof,

Are you trying to say that you would like to get paid for managing this project?

I think you certainly deserve to be paid for your efforts. Talented IT people should not be expected to work for free. But this is a volunteer project for all of us. Should not the University of Warsaw, or the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences be supporting you?

I certainly understand if you can not continue. You have done more than your fair share for science. It seems that the institutions may be letting you down. I hope they can find some way to pay you something. Good luck.

Yes, some institution should pick up this project and get it funded. Until today I thought this was run by an institution, not just one person.

It is under institution but... Without funding (before had a grant which expired some time ago).
The only current financial support is a space and electricity in its servers site.

Happy to contribute - people like you are the forefathers of future DC efforts. I hope my $5 per month combined with all other contributions allows you to keep this project alive. Hardware isnt cheap and we all know time is preciously limited, but so is being able to pursue what you are passionate about.

The arrogance of some of the messages here is shocking. You gave us something to be passionate about too, and some people think the right thing for you is to pay us? Basically thanks for nothing and a slap across the face for all your effort over the years?

@Paul Derbyshite - You can join Gridcoin to get some recompense for your efforts. Not a bad place and a fledgling crypto, all in the name of computing for humankind.

Whilst I appreciate all the work you have done and are doing, I'm not in a position to contribute to a wage. I'm on a below average income myself with a young family to feed. I've invested a lot of money into my crunching equipment and electricity prices in Australia are some of the highest in the world.
It's a shame that other bodies (like the university) with far deeper pockets than my own can't support you with this work.
I'm trying not to see your words as a threat that if you don't get paid by volunteers then you will discontinue Universe@Home but your post has planted a seed of uncertainty for me.
It would be a shame if the project died but I guess "if you don't ask, you don't get" so perhaps others with more spare money will assist you.
Best of luck and thank you once again for your hard work Krzysztof.

Just to be clear. The project will not be ended, not by me, even if I move to other tasks.

I'm just asking for support, as I'm with DC from (from my memory - just check my SETI@Home account creation date) since 1998 or 1999, supporting BOINC from day one.
Also, now it's not simply "setup, run, forgot" kind of project. It require loads of work, as some major work need to be done, including major tasks regarding to server updates (last just finished, but more in progress), server maintaining (there is quite complicated infrastructure as the project operate on large data bases) etc...

All of this tasks should be done on daily basis, not just when I have some free time between other jobs...

That's great to hear. The science here is very good and I would hate to see it stopped.

I think you need to recruit some people to help with donating their time. That's often easier than financing a salary. Teach them what they need to do daily, or every other day, or once a week or what have you. Take the burden off of you.
